Smoke Free Casinos?

Monday October 11, 2004
A host of gaming experts warned casino bosses this week that their industry is coming under attack by a well-organized and well-funded group of anti-smoking activists that aim to ban smoking in casinos. The lobbying effort coincides with a major public policy trend to outlaw smoking in public places in many states and cities, they said. Those bans could lead to lost jobs and revenue as smokers go elsewhere to gamble, shop or otherwise spend money, they said. Read more from The Las Vegas Sun.

Restuarants in California thought they were going to lose money too but only ended up making more because non-smokers started eating out more. I know many people who say they don’t go to casinos because of smoke and especially because of rude, beligerent smokers who love to smoke you out. California voters decided to get rid of smoking in public places for a reason and that was strictly because of health for patrons and employees both. Indian Casinos should not be allowed to have smoking regardless if on Reservations. They are still within the state and should respect the voters of California’s decision that has to do with the people’s health. They would also help smokers by even giving them a reason not to smoke as many cigarettes per day when at the casino. Also it would help with the turn around on the machines. Smokers who would have to get up and go out for a smoke would give someone else a trun at the machine. There are not enough machines as it is. This would make a lot of people a little happier and give them more of an incentive to go to the casinos.
