Mississippi Votes to Allow Land Casinos
Tuesday October 4, 2005
The Mississippi Senate voted 29-21 on Monday for a House plan to allow the Katrina-destroyed Coast casino industry to rebuild on dry land. Gov. Haley Barbour said he will sign the bill into law soon after it hits his desk. The floating casinos were destroyed by the hurricane and many felt that had they been land based structures they would not have suffered as much damage. There were also concerns that some of the big casino corporations would decide not to rebuild if the laws were not changed.
