Blackjack Revenues Decline
Tuesday December 20, 2005
The latest revenue report from Nevada shows that profits increased by double digits over the same period of time last year. The casinos took in 1.058 billion dollars in October which was a 14.4 percent increase over the 2004 amount.
There was an increase in revenue for all the games except Blackjack, which declined 2.3 percent. This may be a shock to the casino owners but was not a surprise to the knowledgeable player. One only has to look at what they have done to the game to understand why. They changed the payout for a natural Blackjack making the game less desirable to play.
Instead of paying 3 to 2 for natural Blackjacks the casinos are paying 6 to 5. If you are betting ten dollars a hand you would normally be paid $15 dollars for a blackjack. Instead with a blackjack paying 6 to 5 you will only be paid $12 for your natural. This one rule variation increases the house edge by 1 ½ percent. This puts the basic strategy player at a two percent disadvantage.
The casinos made this change because they wanted to raise the house edge to generate more revenue from the game. The decline in revenue for Blackjack means that the smart players are avoiding these games. Maybe the casinos will finally get wise and return the game to the way it was.
