When you bet on a horse race you are not playing against the house. Instead you are making a parimutuel wager and are betting against all the other players wagering on that event. Parimutuel betting is credited to Pierre Oller who in 1865 had the idea in to sell tickets on a horse race and keeping all the proceeds in a common prize pool to be split amongst the winners.
