Hold’em A-Z: K is for Kicker

Wednesday March 8, 2006
A kicker is a card in an unpaired card in your hand that will determine the winner in the event of a tie. There are many times when the winning pot is determined by a kicker. Often players don't think about it until they lose one of these hands. You must consider your kicker when choosing your starting hands

(1) Wynand says:

Say the flop after the rivercard is 5-7-k-A-9
Player one: K-8
Player two: K-3
Can the A in the flop serve as the highest kicker and the pot is splitted or does player one win because the 8 is a higher card than the 3?

(2) Bill says:

In the example you gave, the highest hand is: K-K-A-9-8.

So player one is the winner.
