Atlantic City Casinos Closed
Wednesday July 5, 2006
For the first time in 28 years the casinos in Atlantic City are shut down. State law prohibits the casinos remaining open without the supervision of Casino Control Commission employees, who join the ranks of the 45,000 state workers already furloughed during the budget crisis.
The casios generate about 1.3 million per day in tax revenue for the State and this wil only add to the budget woes. The Atlantic City casinos have a $1.1 billion payroll and spend billions more on goods and services. The state gets an 8 percent cut of their revenue.
Govenor Jon S. Corzine plans to meet with the 120 New Jersey lawmakers later this morning.
