WSOP Shattering Records From The Start

Monday July 10, 2006
The World Series of Poker kicked of the 2006 tournament on Monday June 25th with the annual Casino Employee's Tournament. The real action got underway the next day with the $1,500 buy-in no limit tournament that shattered records with 2,776 players making it one of the largest poker tournaments in history. Only the 2005 WSOP main event attracted more players. (5,619)

The tournament was a sell out and there were 488 alternate players who were seated as other players busted out. The seating of the alternates took only two hours for the 3 day tournament. The event was won by Brandon Cantu who took down the $757,839 first prize.

This year the WSOP has been expanded to 45 events. Due to the record number of entrants, Harrah's and ESPN (who has the broadcast rights) have decided to make all the televised tournaments three day events instead of the traditional two days. The main event will go at least 7 days with multiple "first day" starts to accommodate expected crowds.

Those wishing to follow the action can visit the official Word Series of Poker website for all the latest news and tournament information.
