Atlantic City Still Arguing Smoking Ban

Monday February 12, 2007
The City Council in Atlantic City addressed a loophole in a 2006 state anti-smoking law that generally banned smoking in public places except for cigar bars and the gaming floors of Atlantic City's 11 casinos. After more than a dozen hours of hearings, council introduced the 75 percent ban at its Jan. 24 meeting. It gives casinos deadlines to build separate enclosures for its smoking sections. Council members said the compromise was done in part to keep casinos from challenging the measure in court. Casinos had earlier complained about potentially losing customers to places where they could smoke, leading to job losses. A complete ban of smoking was supposed to take place in April of this year.

If you think a gambler is going to quit gambling just because he can not smoke. Guess again, I don’t think so. Besides it is bad for your health. If all the smokers leave AC I’ll be happpy.

First, they took away the rattling coins and switched to printed tickets. I don’t know, I kind of liked the tone of the old traditional gambling houses – drinking, smoking, hookers, etc. Now that the Corporate guys have taken over, they want to sanitize the casinos. It’s not as fun as it used to be!

The smoke in AC Casinos is just disgusting. I am asthmatic and I have the right to breathe and gamble. It is more essential for me to breathe than for a smoker to smoke. Smokers have no idea how horrible they smell. My clothes reak after being in AC. I say let the smokers smoke, but in a section with no added ventilation for them so that they can get the full extra heavy buzz they seem to crave. Have it set up so that dealers etc have enclosed breathing suites that give them smoke free air. Provide no ash trays and just have no carpet so the ground eventually becomes several feet deep in cigarette butts. Never clean it up. Just let them crawl over their own mess to get to the tables and machines. Also, lower the odds for these sections since smoking costs casinos money.
