Casinos Find Loose Change

Tuesday April 17, 2007
When I was a child I used to love it when my parents hosted a party for their friends because I knew that there was a chance to profit from the event. The morning after their party I would be the first one up and I would check under the cushions of our large sofa for loose change that fell out of pockets the night before. Some mornings were very profitable. I'm sure there are many of you who have also found some spare change under the cushions from time to time. I had not thought about this for years but it came to mind when I read story in Gaming Today about the closed Sands Casino in Atlantic City.

The Sands closed last November after being bought by Pinnacle Entertainment and it is being torn down to make way for a new casino. Workers have been removing all of the slot machines in the casino and in the process they have found more than $17,000 worth of coins that fell under, behind and around the slot machines, some of which have been in place for 30 years.

A similar situation occurred when the machines were removed from the closed Nevada Landing casino which closed in March. Workers there found around $10,000 or 675 pounds of coins while dismantling the slot machines. I guess this is another reason why the casinos are in favor of the new coinless slot machines.
