Nevada Assembly Passes Tipping Bill

Sunday May 6, 2007
Last Fall Steve Wynn created uproar when he forced the casino dealers at his Las Vegas Casino to share a portion of their tips with the middle managers, floor supervisors and pit bosses. His reasoning was that the dealers were making more money than their bosses so there was no incentive for a dealer to move up to a management position. The new policy cost the dealers about 20 percent of their tips. They vowed to fight.

Last week the Nevada Assembly passed a tip pooling bill. It now needs to be approved by the Nevada Senate. If passed into law, it will stop the practice of tip pooling.

I have always been a big supporter of tipping casino dealers. Years ago I worked as a bartender and know what it is like to have to rely on tips as part of your daily wages. The more you hustled, the more you made in tips. If Mr Wynn is concerned that his dealers are making more than their bosses he should increase their wages not take money that the dealers earned to make up the difference.

You are absolutely correct. Let Steve PAY more to the Pit Bosses and supervisors, not yake away from the dealers and make them SUBSIDIZE them. The dealers are the people who are doing the work, certainly not the pit bosses, they don’t do anything except stand around and shoot the breeze with each other and try to look important (actually just looking stupid)I love it when I am taking “their” money It sure scares them and makes them nerveous that they might lose their jobs because I got into the casinos pockets! Love it!

I agree that the practice is unfair to the dealers. The remedy is not legislation, however.

The law would violate the individual rights of the business owner to establish policy for his enterprise.

The dealers need to take their gripe to the boss and if he’s too stupid to listen, find another job.
