WSOP Falls Short of Record
Tuesday July 10, 2007
There will be no new attendance record for the main event of the World Series of Poker this year. The number of entries in this year's $10,000 no limit Texas Hold'em tournament was officially announced as 6,358 short of last year's record of 8,773 players.
The decrease is due to the new anti-internet gambling bill that forced the WSOP to turn down third party entries from the online poker sites.
Top prize at the 2007 World Series of Poker will be about $8.23 million. This amount reflects the new prize structure that spreads more money down the line to those finishing in the money at the lower end. Although far less than last year's record $12 million, the top prize is still one of the richest prizes for a poker tournament.
