Some People Still Believe The Slot Myths

Thursday July 19, 2007
I was attending a party last weekend and as I was mingling with the crowd I approached a group of people who were discussing our local casino. I did not know any of the group so I chose just to stand and listen for awhile. One fellow was telling the group about his recent win playing the slots and he said he had a system for winning. This got me curious because I know there are no systems that you can use to beat the slots.

He proceeded to tell the group that he never uses a player's club card when he plays because this affects the payouts of the machines. One of the women in the group agreed and said she never wins when she has her card in the machine. At his point I joined the conversation and asked if they thought about how much free money they were losing in comps by not using their player's card.

I then introduced myself and told them I was the About.com to casino gambling and that it was a myth that the machines pay better if you don't use your card. I then went on to explain how a slot machine operates and the fact that the card reader is not connected to the random number generator that picks the winning combinations.

I would like to say that he accepted my explanation but this was not the case. He went on to argue his point that he was correct. Instead of arguing with someone whose mind is not going to be changed, I walked away to find another group to converse with. For more information about Slot machine myths and how they operate take a look at the following articles.

I don’t believe in slot myths, but gamblers are insistant about their ways. It’s all luck, being at the right place at the right time. After reading about gambling, buying books the whole works, it all boils down to LUCK. You either have it you don’t. I’m lucky enough, I can’t say I’m lucky all the time, because I do lose! Everybody seems to be hitting except me! So another day another dollar.

Good LUCK, gamblers ! Learn to lose!

I have worked in casinos for a decade; I’m in player develoment, so slot clubs and casino hosts are my specialty. Let me say this to those of you who believe the cards will keep you from winning: it would do us absolutely no good to give you a card and encourage you to use it and then make you lose. The state regulatory bodies would shut the doors of any casino that tried to do such a thing, and if people don’t use their cards, casinos can’t gather valuable player information. Using the card whenever you play lets us send you coupons that relate to you and your gaming habits, including FREE PLAY in slot machines. We’d be really silly to MAKE people lose!

One point I would like to add. The advantage to not using the players card, is the casino can’t track every single cent you’ve won. Just in case you get audited by the IRS, and you only report WG’s and not the smaller amounts that you’ve won. If the IRS request a win/lost statement (and not just total lost or total won for the year), the casino can pull up an exact detail of dollars in vs. dollars out. The IRS can see that you reported less than the amount you should of reported. For example I did a search on the internet, and this couple was audited. They wrote off $80,000, when the casino provided an actual detailed statement to the IRS, they actually had won $800,000 (when you combine all amounts won! AND NOT just WG’s). I don’t think most people realize how much they are actually play back by the end of the year, when they play back their credits they’ve won. It can really add up if you are a gambler!

Word of caution, Catchmeifyoucan
