Betting NFL Underdogs

Thursday October 11, 2007
When the Las Vegas bookmakers make their line each week they are looking to set a point spread number that will split the wagering evenly on both teams. For this reason the line may change from the opening line to the line at game time. The majority of NFL bettors love to wager on the favorite teams to win. Over the long run this has proved to be a losing proposition for most players. Last year was a rare occurrence where the favored teams won a majority of the games. This year the underdogs are back on track and the bookmakers have seen profits soar for the first five weeks of the NFL season. The underdogs win record versus the spread is: 42 wins -27 losses -5 ties.

When I first started betting football a seasoned pro advised me to look at the right side of the line. This means to look at the teams getting the points as they are always listed on the right side of the printed line and the favorite team is listed on the left side. I have followed this advice over they years and found that it has been profitable to bet against the crowd. Remember this the next time you are betting on a football game.
