Mississippi Coast Casinos Set Record
Sunday January 20, 2008
2007 was a record year for Mississippi's Coast Casinos as they ended the year with $2.89 billion in gross gambling revenue. The previous record was $2.77 billion in 2004, the year before Hurricane Katrina wiped out casinos along the Mississippi Gulf Coast in August 2005.
When I read the report of the record revenues, my first thought was about all of the areas that have still not been rebuilt since Katrina. It may seem as if the priorities to rebuild the casinos was misplaced, however the casinos employ 15,000 people who were previously out of work and that number is expected to grow. This is good for the area and the rebuilding process.
