Looking For an Airline Bump

Monday June 16, 2008
The last time I flew to Las Vegas my airfare was half the price that I am paying for this trip. The price of airfare has always been the major expense when I travel to Las Vegas but in the past I could usually find deal online by adjusting my travel itinerary. Unfortunately with the high price of fuel I was unable to get any bargain flights this time.

Several years ago I used to try to get bumped from my flights to take advantage of the free flight vouchers that the airlines gave to passengers who were bumped from their flight. I gave up the practice because most of the time I just wanted to get where I was going and did not feel that it was worth my time to hang around the airport for a few additional hours in return for a free trip. When I fly this week I may try to get bumped because with the present price of airfare it just might be worth my time to do it. Here is how an airline bump works.

I wouldn’t “jump” at airline bumps at moment. They have substantially reduced capacity and it may not be “just a few hours” until next flight. Plus with less flight, to fewer places, you might be re-routed round the country to get there. I would especially make sure I understood their terms now. A $200 voucher for future flights will NOT go as far as it used to. Just be cautious.
