The Poker Boom Has Peaked
Sunday July 6, 2008
The poker boom has peaked according to a published report from the University of Pennsylvania. The report said that the number of college aged men playing poker has declined 4.4 percent in the last year and is down more than 16 percent since 2006. Another study of Nevada poker rooms conducted by The Gaming Today News confirms the report and said that revenues generated from poker rooms in Nevada have declined about seven percent per month from the beginning of the year.
Of course poker is not the only segment of the gaming industry that has suffered. Overall revenues from gaming are down this year because of the state of the economy. However poker has seen the biggest drop and there are reports that some of the poker rooms are starting to cut back on the number of tables. In 2007 there were 911 poker tables in the State and a survey in April 2008 showed 905 tables. This is a small number but it is the first time since 2003 that there has been any decline in the number of tables.
