Getting the Right Pot Odds Is Not An Idiotic Call

Friday August 22, 2008
I was playing in a sit and go tournament this morning and I was called a complete idiot (and a few other words I can't publish) after I busted a player who had pocket aces with my six and eight of hearts. Unfortunately for him he gave me the correct odds to make the call I did. Here is how it happened.

It was a no limit tournament and the blinds were $25 and $50. I was in the big blind with the six and eight of hearts. Everyone folded to the guy on the button who only raised a single bet of $50 making it $100. The small blind folded and it was up to me. There was $175 in the pot and it would only cost me an additional $50 to call his raise so I was getting 3.5 to 1 in pot odds to make the call. I knew that against a random I was less than a 3.5 to 1 underdog so I was getting the correct pot odds to make the call.

There were three hearts on the flop giving me a flush. I checked and he went all in with his pocket aces. I called and knocked him out. He then started ranting that I was an idiot for defending my blind when in fact he made two mistakes that ultimately knocked him out of the tournament. First he only raised a single bet which gave me the correct odds to call his pre-flop raise. If he had raised more I would not have called. Secondly, he moved all in after there were three suited cards on the flop. I think if he really wants to call someone an idiot he should look in the mirror.

I totally agree on your play my only question is was one of his aces a heart ? That might be the only thing that could have made a difference on why he bet the way he did .

aces are overplayed all of the time-If he didn’t see the flush on the board coming the hell with him.

I’ve seen the scary AA killed by less intimidation cards, I think that it is a 47% in favor of pocked A’s so there is room for being shut out or out flopped 2 pair 2’s & 3’s is more than enough, nuf said..

Pocket Aces does make people over confident and I’ve really never understood that, since It’s not hard at all to see a flop, turn card and river come out like 3 7 Q 9 2……only need 2pr to get the AA right into the trash…….Pocket rockets is a very good hand but NOT a perfect hand
…….no such thing in Poker LOL

What you forgot to mention was this was a $5 or $10 Sng full of wanna be poker players. Play $100+ Sng’s or higher limits cash games, you wouldn’t be called an idiot or faced an all in, in that scenario. The problem with novice players is they won’t go all in with a big hand for fear of not getting paid off, so they bet small, prey to god you hit but not well enough to have them beat, go all in and think it’s their right to win that hand. Then they become hysterical when called and find themselves behind (which usually occurs when they get called).

“A good poker player does not ask for nor expects the perfect hand to play.”

“I don’t necessarily agree with every hand I play. I play it because it is correct.”
