Using Video Poker Strategy Charts Beats Hunches

Friday September 12, 2008
I was playing video poker at the casino last week and a woman sat down to play the machine next to mine. After about five hands she paused and asked, "How would you play this hand."

She was playing Jacks of Better and I looked over and saw that she had a small pair but also had a four card flush. I told her to keep the flush draw. She thanked me and a few minutes later she again asked me how to play a certain hand. This went on for a while and after the seveth time she asked how to play a hand, I asked her if she had ever played video poker before. She said she had not but decided t o play it because she heard that the return on video poker was better than the return on the slot machines.

I explained to her that the return was only better if you played the correct strategy for the game. Each variation of video poker has its own unique strategy that will give you the highest return. If you sit down and play by hunch, video poker can be a worse game to play than the slot machines. Luckily you can use a video poker strategy chart while you play to help you make the correct decisions. She asked where she could get one and I told her I had a few of them on this site and gave her my card. If you are looking for a video poker strategy chart for some of the more popular games you can find them here and also download a pdf to take with you to the casino.
