Kickers Cause Trouble For Many Players

Friday October 17, 2008
I'm in Las Vegas this week and I'm enjoying playing in different poker rooms around town. When I'm not playing tournaments I play mostly Limit Texas Holdem. One thing that I have noticed in many of my playing sessions is that many players will try to play a no limit strategy in a limit game. One of the mistakes I see happening often is that the players tend to over value small pocket pairs. They will raise from early position with a small pair and then continue betting even after the flop contains over cards.

Perhaps the biggest mistake I have seen in the last few days is the number of players who will play a single ace or a king with a small kicker. The player flops top pair only to get beat because of their weak kicker. Now sometimes it happens to the player in the big blind who got in for free with a hand like King- Four. They flop top pair with a flop that contains King - Jack - Ten but then won't lay down the hand when they bet and get re-raised. If you want to be a winning player you need to be able to dump those hands with a weak kicker. Of course I'll never say anything at the table. I enjoy raking in their chips when they play these hands.
