Exploring the G2E

Wednesday November 19, 2008
I have been attending the G2E for the last several years and the show just keeps getting bigger each year. Even this year with the economic slowdown the show is as big as ever. I'm glad it is a three day event because there is no way I could see everything in one day. There are at least 1,000 slot machines and probably a hundred or more table games. I spent all day Tuesday trying some of the new slot games and a few new table games. There is still plenty more to see.

All of the major slot makers are there including: Aristrocrat, Ballys, IGT, WMS and a few of the smaller slot manufacturers. Each company has an area on the convention floor displaying their games. You can play the machines to get see how they look and check out the different features of each game. Most of the slot games have already been approved by the regulatory boards in many of the gaming jurisdictions and are ready for the casino floor. The majority of the games are the "penny" slot machines with 20 or more pay lines that allow the player to wager several dollars per spin. One game I saw had 250 pay lines. I asked the slot maker when they would stop adding lines and he told me it would only happen when the players stopped playing them.

The primary focus of the new games is entertainment and more pay lines means a higher hit frequency for the game. It does not matter that a "winning spin" can pay less than your initial wager. I think it is amazing that many players have accepted the fact that a spin that pays back less is a winning spin. Call me cynical but if I wager

Hi Bill,
Sure enjoy your interesting articles.I was wondering the same thing about a winning spin. It just doesn’t make any sense.I am a video keno player. And as of the past 4-5 yrs,I have noticed how the odds are very terrible to win anymore.Ya just don’t see any good hits like ya used to here in Vegas. Its sad to say, but I always tell my family and friends,if ya wanna win alittle now and then, play at your local casino’s back east.I hear alot from my friends back east on what they have hit,and how we are enjoying our times here.I have to be very honest with them telling how bad the percentages are.If they wanna come out any enjoy the scenery, thats great. But if they come out to gamble, play where they’re at. Isn’t that terrible to say, when you live at the gambling “mecca” of the world? My feeling is that casino giants in this state, is wanting to take all your money at one time, instead of giving some of it back once in a while.I’m just waiting for one of these “giants to take notice on why they can’t bring in more of the crowd. And what it takes to bring them back.”Its winning alittle of your money back”. As I have said before in your comments, ya just don’t see lites going off at any machines like ya used to.And that trend continues. Its just sad to see and feel, that folks like myself, enjoy playing with the opportunity to hit once in awhile.I’m just waitng for a intelligent person to figure this out.
As for Nevada? I love the weather, scenary and plan to retire here. But as for the gambling? I would have to tell my closest friends and family to stay home. And thats sad to say. I just wonder how many folks are saying the same.
I guess by you letting me voice my opinion, maybe somebody in the industry will take these opinions to the bank, and realize how this started bringing people in to their casino’s, and where it is now.
Thanks for letting my opinion be heard.

Dave, I agree with you! In Wisconsin, all we have are Indian Casinos with challenging paybacks. Illinois, with the riverboats, are better. With the demise of smaller, independent casinos, think Westward Ho, Stardust, Boardwalk, the overhead is too high to have great payoffs like we used to see. Walk through MGM grand and very little hoot and holler. JB

Dave, JayBee, I could not agree more. I was going to Vegas 4 times a year and coming home a loser EVERYTIME. I cut back to 2 times last year and will cut back to once in 2009.
The only reason I go to Vegas now is because my rooms are comped and I enjoy some of the shows. Nows that I have trimmed my Vegas budget, I will probably lose my room comps and then it will be bye, bye Vegas. To bad!
