Fire Closes Empress Casino in Jolliet Illinois
Sunday March 22, 2009
A roaring fire swept through the Empress Casino complex in Jolliet, Illinois for more than nine hours Friday. Firefighters gave up trying to save the ballroom and the pavilion that housed the restaurants and gift shop. The casino was saved but is closed while damage is being assessed. Empress management has not yet set a timetable for returning to business but general manager Frank Quigley said Saturday the casino will come back "bigger and better" when it reopens.
The Chicago Tribune said the fire caused significant damage to the casino's Egyptian-themed entrance, but did not result in any injuries. The blaze appears to have been the result of welding work on a kitchen duct system, the newspaper said.
A little over a year ago a fire at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas was caused by welders working on the roof. That same week there was a fire at the Foxwoods casino in Connecticut. This most recent fire is another reminder that we all need to periodically refresh our knowledge of what to do during a fire. Here are some fire safety tips to keep in mind.
