Southern Hospitality Found in Tunica

Monday April 27, 2009
I spent this past weekend in Tunica, Mississippi teaching a craps class. When I mentioned to some friends that I was traveling to Tunica for a few days, they wanted to know where it was and if they casinos there.

Most people know that there are casinos in Biloxi Mississippi because it made national news when they were destroyed during hurricane Katrina, however many people are unaware that Tunica has nine casinos which makes it one of the five largest casino vacation destinations in the United States. Tunica is about 20 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee and is about a 40 minute drive from the Memphis airport.

My experience in Tunica was completely opposite of the weekend I spent in Atlantic City a few weeks ago. The hotel and casino staff were courteous and friendly and even on crowded Saturday night you can find low table limits on the games. Las Vegas is still my gambling destination but I found I had a much more enjoyable time in Tunica than I did in Atlantic City and I'm looking forward to my next trip there.

I just got back from Tunica. I have been going there for the last 8 years traveling from upstate New York. Things have really changed there. The Horseshoe Casino was my favorite for single deck games, but this time with the use of 2 decks, shuffle machines and such, it was not what it use to be. We found a great game at The Grand. Played 16 hrs straight, and took home money! This single deck game, min. 25 bet, great rules-blackjack did not pay the 6:5, it paid 3:2, hand shuffled, and finest hospitality ever. Do you know where else in the country I can find single deck blackjack games, with the same rules? I have tried searching up online and having a hard time. thanks! Glad you had a nice trip there.
