Losing Your Comp Points

Wednesday June 3, 2009
Many players are visiting the casino less frequently and this is presenting a problem for some of them. My friend Mike called me the other day to tell me about an experience he had during his last casino visit. He said that because of the economy he had not been to the casino for almost a year. He went to the casino last weekend and when he inserted his player's card into the slot machine, it read that he had no comp points.

He could not remember the exact amount but he knew that he had points on his card so he went to the player's club to find out what happened to his points. He was told that his points had been erased because he had not put any play on his card within the last nine months. This was the casinos policy. Mike asked to speak with a host. He explained to her the he and his wife used to visit he casino about once a month but had to cut back during the last year. The host looked at his past play and because he had been a frequent visitor, she had his points put back on his card.

What happened to Mike is not uncommon. I know of several casinos that have similar policies. There is also the chance that the casino will have an ownership change which can affect a player's points. A few years ago I lost a lot of points at a Las Vegas casino after they were sold and the old player's club was replaced. From that time on I made sure that I used my points before flying home. If a casino offers cash back I make sure to collect it all right before I check out. I try to only keep points on the card from my local casino. Have you ever lost points from a slot club?

You have to look at this from the casino’s perspective. Comp points have a negative impact on the casino’s balance sheet. They are considered a liability, just like an unpaid debt. Many people sign up for a card at every casino they visit, earn a few points, then seldom return. Tally all these up and a casino could be carrying millions of dollars of liability on their books. This is the same reason why store coupons have expiration dates. If you don’t use them in a reasonable amount of time, you lose them. At least with a casino all you have to do is go back a couple of times a year to keep your points valid.

I just received a letter from the Palms that my points will be erased if I do not come to claim them. It appears they are going to a new system. Unfortunately, I will lose any points I have as I will not be going to Vegas before the deadline to use them.

From my personal experience, which is only once a year to Vegas for a bowling tournament, I never seem to be able to win or play enough to accumulate enough points to be worth much anyway. The casinos/hotels seem to be too greedy to really give anything of much value away unless they see a way to gain even more for themselves. In addition to that, it seems that most working people in Vegas are so rude, I almost hate to even go there anymore. Call me old-fashioned, but I like a little common courtesy at least, when I have paid big dollars for services/hotel room, etc.
