Million Dollar Arizona State Poker Championship

The Talking Stick Resort of Casino Arizona will hold the 7th Annual State Poker Championship in its year-old property in August. The poker room has 50 tables and handled last year's mob of 900 entrants with hardly a hiccup.

Poker Manager Kent Odekirk anticipates a rise in entries and the staff is ready to accommodate the large crowd. Special hotel prices will be available for registered players. More information on the Talking Stick Resort, room rates, and the poker room is available at 480-850-7777.

The tournament is a $1070 buy-in event which gets players $15,000 in starting chips. A special dealer-appreciation add-on gets players another 5,000 chips for $15. This is a true deep-stack tournament with 45-minute levels and blinds starting at just 25-50.

Last year's champion, 24-year-old Phoenix resident Ted Goldstein, pocketed a hefty $336,368 for his tremendous play.

The main event starts at 9 a.m. on August 12th. First round days will include the 13h and 14th with day 2 for all players on the 15th. The tournament should wrap on the 16th.

In addition to plenty of live games available around the clock in the poker room, there are now four blackjack tables. Blackjack was added to offer continuous non-smoking games and keep 21 close to the poker room. Blackjack players may also order meals from the poker room's discounted food menu.

Meanwhile, I dropped into Fort Mcdowell casino (down Shea Boulevard towards Fountain Hills) last night for a poker tournament and found new construction.

The unrelenting spread of slot machines is taking half of the previously spacious poker room. A new wall is already built and it looks like the room has effectively been split in half.

Plans for the new room include more large-screen TV's and a new football promotion for the upcoming season. There will be ample room for 10 tables.
