When I heard about the Epic Poker League with former World Series of Poker commissioner Jeffrey Pollack as Executive Chairman and Annie Duke and Matt Savage in key rolls, I thought, "great, a real league with a future."
All Epic Poker events, run by Federated Sports and Gaming, are being staged at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. There are plans for broadcasts on CBS and Velocity Network.
Unfortunately, I don't qualify for the league, not even for the lowest bracket, which requires $2,000,000 in lifetime earnings, one major title, and six cashes in $1,500 minimum buy-in tournaments since 2008.
Those requirements leave most of us out in the cold. However, today I got an invitation to Epic Poker's $1,500 Pro/Am slated for Sept. 2 to 5 at the Palms. Players who win a seat in the $20,000 Championship event get to play out the rest of the season with a provisional membership.
The Palms is hosting a series of $100 and $180 buy-in satellites to the $1500 Pro/Am for the next few days. Tournament times are here.
Perhaps some enterprising individuals will convince a few casinos to host a series of poker tournaments that would post results, award prizes and points, and feature a "season long" quest for a year-end tournament. You know, for those of us who haven't won $2,000,000 playing tournaments.
How about a league with $55 tournaments so you can include the other 99.8 percent of the world's poker players?
All players should be invited, perhaps a small annual fee, and no other requirements other than providing a name and address and a photo ID to confirm each entrant.
I used to bowl with the Amateur Bowlers Tour and they set up tournaments with bowling alleys, arranged memberships, and put out a newsletter, and everybody involved had a great time.
Anybody want to sponsor a group of non - $2,000,000 winners in a league?
