Managing Your Vacation Bankroll

Casino Ploys

From , former About.com Guide

I recently read a survey in USA Today that stated the average American worker only receives two weeks vacation a year. This is in contrast to some of the European countries whose workers average eight or more weeks a year. It’s now wonder that we consider vacations special and try to squeeze out every minute of enjoyment that we can in the limited amount of time we have. This usually means planning a trip to some exotic destination or at least planning spending some time participating in activities that we enjoy. Since you are reading this article you obviously have some interest in casino gambling. Visiting a resort casino for vacation can be very exciting. It can also present some unique challenges that you wouldn’t normally encounter at another vacation destination.

Before you visit a casino for vacation you will have to make some decisions as to how much time and how much money you want to spend gambling. If you went to the beach for vacation you would not spend all your time in water. Therefore when you go to a casino you are not going to spend all your time in the casino playing. You will want plan other activities in addition to your gambling. These are activities you would do if you were not at a casino resort. Some of these may include going to a show, sightseeing, swimming or shopping or even just a lounging and round taking it easy

. By planning these other activities it will be less likely for you succumb to the temptation to bet more and play longer than you had planned to. It also helps to be aware of some of the methods the casino use to entice you to do just that. Even the best of us can be caught off guard and lose control when we fall into some of the casino traps.

The casino is a place of glitz and glamour and a virtual fantasy world once you walk through the doors. The excitement of the sights and sounds and the general atmosphere helps to add to that feeling. Many people get caught up in the excitement. When this happens it is easy to get carried away and gamble more than you should. This is exactly what the casinos WANT you to do. Casinos are a business, BIG business. Their primary business is separating you from your money and making you think you’re having fun while they do it. They do this in a few ways.

1) They convert your cash into chips at the tables. You find yourself looking at the chips and seeing red and green tokens. You lose the sense that it is really money. This leads to over betting.

2) Once you place your money into the slot machine all you see are credits on the meter. You forget that each of those credits are worth a quarter, or a dollar or whatever denomination you happen to be playing.

3) They supply you with FREE drinks while you are playing. A few cocktails loosen up your inhibitions and get you to bet more. One gambling writer I know calls free drinks “Chip Remover!”

4) Finally the pace of the casino is fast. The dealers try to deal at lightning speed. They maximum bet buttons on the slot machines so you can keep hitting the spin button as fast as you can. This is much faster than pulling the arm to activate the old slot machines.

Keep these subtle ploys in mind while you are in the casino. Also remember that one thing that turns winners into losers is the notion that once they win they are playing with the casino’s money. Once you win, it is YOUR MONEY. Don’t give it back. When you get ahead, take half of your winnings and put it in a different pocket to take home with you.

It’s easy to leave the casino when all your money is gone. It takes discipline to walk away when you are ahead. Discipline and control is what separates winners from losers If you don’t learn how to handle YOUR money, the casino will do it for you once it becomes THEIR money!
