Texas Hold'em 101 Texas Hold'em is the most popular poker game in the world. Before you head down to the cardroom to play your should know the basics of the game. Here is how to play along with some winning tips to get you started. A is For Ace This is the first article of a new series called Texas Hold'em A-Z. Each article will cover a topic relating to Texas Hold'em and there will be one for every letter of the alphabet from A to Z. Since I will start with the letter "A", it's only fitting that A is for Ace.
B is for Bluffing A bluff is a bet or raise made with a hand that has no chance of winning. The purpose is to win a pot when your hand is not strong enough to do so on it’s own. You are essentially representing a big hand when in reality you have nothing. Bluffing is a very valuable weapon to have in your poker arsenal but you should make sure you use it correctly and don’t over use it. C is for Calling Calling is defined as putting money in the pot to match a bet that has been made before your turn to act. The number one reason that players lose money is they play too many hands. This means they call too much. D Is for Defending the Blinds In Texas Hold'em to get some money in the pot to start a hand, two blinds are posted. When a player in the blind puts in additional money to call a raise it is known as “Defending the Blind.” Many players lose a lot of money by playing incorrectly from the blinds and defending the blind with inferior hand is one of the major leaks in the game of otherwise solid players. Limit Hold’em A-Z: E is for Evaluating Players Many players will sit down in a Texas Hold’em game and play as if they are wearing blinders. They see only their own two cards ant the cards on the board. They give little or no regard to the other players at the table. This is not the way to play winning poker. In order to be successful you will need to study and evaluate your opponents at the table. Playing Poker Online The number of Poker players logging on to play online is growing. Here are a few advantages to playing online as well as a look at some safety concerns involved with online play. Texas Hold'em Outs and Odds In poker your outs are the unseen cards that will complete or improve your hand to make it the winning hand. By knowing the number you can calculate your odds of making the hand. Here is an easy way to figure your odds, reprinted from my book. Losing Hold'em ASAP ASAP is an acronym that is used when you want something fast. It’s also can be used to describe a Texas Hold’em player who likes to play certain type of hand. Bad Beats A bad beat in poker is when you have a good hand that is a favorite to win beaten by another hand. Bad beats are a normal part of poker that a good player learns to accept.
