Part 1: Casino of the Sky
|
Last week I wrote about the new smoke free casino at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville CT. In that article I told you they are in the process of expanding the facility. Project Sunburst as it is called will triple the size of the existing casino complex. The project will be completed in two phases. Phase one of the project is slated to open in October and Phase Two will be completed in April of 2002.

I had the opportunity to tour the construction site and get a glimpse of the work in progress. I was truly impressed with the thought and design that went into this new facility.
Phase one of Project Sunburst will include an additional casino facility known as the Casino of the Sky. This new casino area will add an additional 115,000sq. Ft of gaming space. There will be 75 new table games and 2,500 new slot machines in the complex. One of highlights of the new casino is the wold's largest planetarium dome that will give an ever-changing view of the stars. It will feature projections of the stars, constellations and the aura borealis. The moon will be in the center of the dome.
The present Mohegan Sun Casino is the "Casino of the Earth." The casino is circular with four quadrants representing the seasons of the year, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. The new "Casino of the Sky" will also be circular in design and the four quadrants will represent he elements, Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.

In the center of the casino will stand Wombi Rock.Wombi Rock is a translucent alabaster and onyx mountain. It will house three levels of entertainment including a lounge and dance floor that will over look the casino. The high stakes pit area will be below the structure.
New Arean for concerts and shows.
The new complex will also include a 10,000-seat arena for concerts, specialty shows, and sporting events. The arena has retractable seating allowing it to be used as an exhibition hall for major trade shows and conventions.
