A Visit WithThe Addams Family

I am a part of the Baby Boom generation. As a kid I remember that Labor Day meant summer was over and it was time to head back to school. I'm sure many of you recall at least one teacher assigning the class the dreaded "What I did on my Summer Vacation" essay. As I think back over this last summer I had a twinge of nostalgia and considered which highlight I would immortalize in my essay if I were back in school.

The scene might go something like this. I'm sitting in English class and Miss Igit would say, "All right class it time to read your essay about what you did during summer vacation. Billy, why don't you go first."

I would walk to the head of the class and give my presentation. "How I sent my summer vacation. By Billy Burton. I went to Las Vegas and visited the Addams Family. They were mean people who took my money. I had fun. The end."

Nostalgia takes us on a whimsical mental journey back to our past when times were simpler and "Have Fun" was the only entry on our Things To Do pad. This concept has not been lost on the slot manufactures. Many of the newer slots are geared toward the baby boom generation and some of these include themes relating to our childhood. On the casino floor we can fine Elvis, the Three Stooges and this summer's entry from International Gaming Technology (IGT), The Addams Family.

In July when I was flying out to Las Vegas I read Frank Legato's review of the Addams Family slot machine in Strictly Slots magazine. As a rule I don't play slots but there was something about the game that sparked my interest. It was the memory of my earlier years flooding back to me, as the slot makers knew it would. As a kid I spent many evenings in the company of Morticia, Gomez and the rest of the kooky family. I even had a "Thing Bank." In the show, Thing was the hand that would come out of the box. The bank was a black box with a coin slot on top. You place a coin in the slot and a hand would come out and snatch the coin away. Little did I realize thirty some years ago that this box was actually a prophecy of "Things" to come in the future? I decided on the plane that I would look for the machines and give them a cursory try. Just for old time's sake.
