With the attack on the United States last week and the horrible tragedy that befell this great country of ours, I will not be writing about casino games this week. Given the terrorist attacks and loss of life that has occurred it puts everything in perspective that the games we play in the casino seem trivial compared to the recent events that has touched each and everyone of us.
In the last few years we have read about terrorists attacks in other parts of the world. I like many other Americans never believed that something of this magnitude could happen in this country. A few weeks ago I was talking to some friends who were planning a trip to Europe. I naively made the comment that with all the unrest in the world I was confining my travels to the US where I felt safe. I never thought this type of attack was possible in this country.
The method of attack really hit home for me. Several times a year I fly from the Northeast to Las Vegas never giving any thought that something like this could happen. Although I don't fly out of Logan Airport these days, I am very familiar with that facility as I spent my college years in Boston.
The About offices are in New York City and I have many friends there. All of my friends escaped injury but unfortunately some of them have friends that are missing. My thought and prayers are with all of those who have lost loved ones or have family or friends listed amongst the missing.
This attack has brought the all of the American people together. Everywhere you go you see flags flying and signs of support. On Friday night, September 7th candlelight ceremonies were held were held around the country in a national day of remembrance in honor of the victims of Tuesday's terrorist strikes in New York and Washington. In Las Vegas when the country was lighting candles the casinos made the decision to shut off the lights on the Strip.
"The lights of Las Vegas have always stood for happy times. It's important that they're off (tonight)." said Park Place spokeswoman Debbie Munch on Friday.
These displays of support and the outpouring of emotions for the families and victims are just the beginning. The peoples of America have been brought together in a spirit of patriotism and unification and have vowed to do what it takes to bring about justice to those who perpetrated these cowardly attacks. We will stand tall and we will prevail.
God Bless America!
