Part 1: Betting Sports Requires Work
|
This is the time of year when the majority of sports bettors start coming alive as we begin to enter the multi-sport season. During the summer all we have is baseball to look forward to. Next week starts one of my favorite times a year Football season. It also means that the NBA and NHL will not be far behind. We will soon be into overlapping sports seasons, which is a bettor's paradise. Those not fortunate enough to live in Las Vegas where sports betting is legal will be entering office pools, logging on to online betting sites or calling their neighborhood "Sports Accountants" to place wagers on the games.
With so many people betting on different sporting games it is probably not a great surprise to learn that the majority of them are LOSERS! There are several reasons that people lose when betting on sporting events.
1. Favorite Team Syndrome
Bettors will bet with their hearts and not their heads. They find it impossible
to bet against their favorite team even though the facts clearly show they
are backing a loser.
2. Not Being Selective.
Some bettors have to have action on many games at a time or they will bet
any game if it is on TV. It's not uncommon to see a player betting 5 or 6
NFL or NBA games on a given day. Players who just have to have a bet on Monday
night football lose more money just because it's on TV. It can be a bad game
but they will bet it.
3. Don't Do Any Homework.
It's sad to say but the majority of sports bettors are lazy. They don't want
spend the time to study the game. They would rather take the advice of a
Sports Columnist or pay a tout service to try to pick a winner for them.
I know several successful sports bettors and they all have one thing in common. They work hard and take the time to study the games. The analyze data and they are very selective about the games they chose to bet on. In the past, analyzing the game was very time consuming involving entering data and scores into a spreadsheet program. Then you had to compare the data for each match up to determine how the team might fair once you added the point spread into the equation.
I was recently introduced to a program that makes this job much easier. It is the Organized Sports Betting Software created by Jerry Bleiman. This program can be used for MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL. It is designed as a tool for helping you determine what game is a fair bet when compared to the bookmaker's line. It will not automatically point out the winner of a game. Instead it shows you the probability in percentages of a team's chances for beating the line. The program will also generate 12 different reports to help you compare the teams. Including win loss record, power ratings average scores and more.
