How Psychology Affects Casino Gambling

By , About.com Guide

Your psychological mood can have a drastic affect on your gambling. Successful gambling depends on a large number of factors, not the least of which is ability or knowledge of the games involved. However, your own frame of mind can bring about almost supernatural changes - if you let it

Now I'm not saying you can "change" things like the fall of the dice or the number that comes up on a roulette wheel, but you can definitely impact the overall outcome by playing smart. We tend not to do that under certain conditions.

One of the most common mistakes players make is gambling when they are tired. The brain doesn't function as quickly or as efficiently when sleep deprived. It is far more likely that you will make poor decisions when you haven't had enough sleep.

By the same token, you are likely to be more easily influenced by your surroundings (other players, the fun and excitement of gambling, or your own mood when you are drinking. That doesn't mean you can't have a bit of liquor and still function, but like drinking and driving, drinking and gambling don't usually go well together. Drinking often limits your inhibitions, and that can lead to serious problems with your bankroll.

Winning Frame of Mind

When you as a gambler are thinking clearly you are more likely to make wise choices with your casino gambling. You won't be trying to fulfill some unobtainable goal with your casino play and you won't be substituting the rush of gambling for love, sex or companionship. You will simply be enjoying your gambling.

A positive outlook and frame of mind is likely to help you follow the rules of the game you are playing without any indecision. If you are playing blackjack and are thinking clearly you are much more likely to follow the rules of basic strategy and enjoy the benefits of correct play. Players tend to adjust their play and especially their betting patterns when they are unhappy.

Poker players deal with the psychology of gambling on a regular basis. They deal with all kinds of players in all types of psychological makeup each game. In fact, learning to read your opponents at poker is a major part of beating the game. And, whatever mood you are in will reflect on your play, and your opponents will pick up on it.

If you are relaxed and happy in the game, your opponents won't have much to go on. However, if you are slumped over not playing much, the other players are likely to "run over" you with bets and make you fold. You've practically asked them to.

On the other hand, if they see you as anxious to get into action because your leg is bouncing up and down and you are chewing madly on a stick of gum, they might just play you in a different mode. You can project these different moods to your advantage, but if you are unaware of them, the other players are going to play you!

Remember, when gambling, especially at poker, a positive outlook makes the other players more cautious and you are much more likely to make good decisions, protect your bankroll, and follow the rules of your favorite casino gambling games that have made you successful in the past. If you aren't happy, neither is your bankroll. When you can't play smart you are much more likely to psych yourself out. That's a good sign you should head on home or to a movie.

Treat your bankroll like your best friend. When you are mad at it, you are likely to lose it. Be aware of your own psychological state before your risk your best friend at the casino.
