A kicker is a card in an unpaired card in your hand that will determine the winner in the event of a tie. There are many times when the winning pot is determined by a kicker. Often players don’t think about it until they lose one of these hands. You must consider your kicker when choosing your starting hands G is for Game Selection
Many players feel that game selection is one of the most important concepts in playing winning Poker. It is also the one that is most often overlooked by most players. There is an adage that says, “You don’t have to be the best poker player in the world. You just have to be better than the other players at your table.” Here are some ideas for picking a game to fit your style. F is for Flop
In Texas Hold'em the Flop is the first three community cards turned up by the dealer. If defines your hand and you should only play if it helps your two starting cards. I is for Implied Odds
Implied odds are the pot odds adjusted for future betting and should be considered when deciding whether to continue playing your hand in Texas Hold’em. When you figure implied odds you are adding bets that you expect to win if you make the winning hand. Here is how to figure the odds. H is for Heads Up
Playing Texas Hold’em heads up against a single opponent requires a completely different strategy than playing at a full table. While some players may choose a heads up game, the most common situation is during tournament play when it gets down to the final two players who are battling it out for the top prize money. In a heads up situation you can’t play tight and expect to win. J is for Jacks
Jacks are a good starting hand but they can be beaten. Many players complain that they lose more money with pocket Jacks than any other hand. Here are some facts about pocket Jacks. E is for Evaluating Players
Many players will sit down in a Texas Hold’em game and play as if they are wearing blinders. They see only their own two cards and the cards on the board. They give little or no regard to the other players at the table. This is not the way to play winning poker. In order to be successful you will need to study and evaluate your opponents at the table. D Is for Defending the Blinds
In Texas Hold'em to get some money in the pot to start a hand, two blinds are posted. When a player in the blind puts in additional money to call a raise it is known as “Defending the Blind.” Many players lose a lot of money by playing incorrectly from the blinds and defending the blind with inferior hand is one of the major leaks in the game of otherwise solid players. C is for Calling
Calling is defined as putting money in the pot to match a bet that has been made before your turn to act. The number one reason that players lose money is they play too many hands. This means they call too much. B is for Bluffing
A bluff is a bet or raise made with a hand that has no chance of winning. The purpose is to win a pot when your hand is not strong enough to do so on it’s own. You are essentially representing a big hand when in reality you have nothing. Bluffing is a very valuable weapon to have in your poker arsenal but you should make sure you use it correctly and don’t over use it. A is For Ace
