It is tougher to hit slot jackpots now than in the past. There, I said it. Been some discussion via email about this subject lately, and it is true: in the past it was easier to hit a jackpot.
On the old electro mechanical slot machines it took about 8000 spins to hit a jackpot. If it was a five-coin nickle machine that jackpot would be $37.50 and if you played 40,000 times those five jackpots would total $187.50
Today, it takes about 40,000 plays to hit a royal flush on a "Jacks or Better" video poker machine to win $200 for a five-nickle bet. That's about the same payoff and about the same number of plays to get the payouts, but as you can see, it takes a lot more plays to hit it, and the variance (meaning you might go a heck of a lot longer to hit a royal) is huge.
Now think about the jackpots on today's nickle slot machines that are computer driven and have millions of outcomes across 9-lines with multiple-coin bets. The odds of hitting the top jackpot are significantly longer than the old 8000-1 or the video poker 44,000-1 odds.
Your payoff is also significantly larger than the old $7.50 - mostly because you will be playing many more coins per spin and the odds are much higher against hitting jackpots.
Overall the slot has better odds per spin, but takes more money to play and gets more spins per minute. Which all means you are spending more per spin for more entertainment, and will hit fewer jackpots. It's not a conspiracy. Try to think of it as progress.

That’s what the players tell us they want. Smaller, more frequent payouts so they can play longer on the same amount of money.
This game seems a bit complicated, but very interesting. need to try to play the casino, especially if you’ve won. we want to try this game again
How does the issue of the casino being a stand-alone (no competition), as are many Native American sites, enter into the payout situation? I’ve often suspected that the local Indian casinos payout a lot less than the mainstream Strip casinos, factoring in the fact that they, the traditional casinos, are also looking for a good bottom line.
Unfortunately, just like a gas station in the middle of nowhere charges more than one at a three-station corner, a casino that has no local competition is likely to have lower overall payout slots.
The casino owners and slot machine manufacturers are much more sophisticated today and put a great deal of effort into stocking the casinos with machines that can extract the highest amount of money possible from the players. They do this with high hit frequency and low payout table slots, substituting attention-grabbing graphics and sounds that reward you on small hits. In effect, you are betting $1.00 and winning .85 on each spin. That keeps you playing without ever hitting a large jackpot, which most people would cash out and leave with a profit. Today, most players go home broke!
