August 04, 2004Rhode Island Casino Battle goes to the VotersHarrah's Entertainment and the Narragansett Indian Tribe won a key victory on Friday, when the House overrode Governor Carcieri's veto of a referendum on their proposed West Warwick casino. But the legislative battle was a mere prelude to what lies ahead, casino proponents said yesterday, as they prepare a statewide campaign to sell the Nov. 2 ballot question to the voters. Harrah's is readying an "aggressive educational campaign," costing at least $2 million, and including new radio and television commercials, said Jan L. Jones, a Harrah's senior vice president. Lincoln Park, which claims its video-slot business will dry up if a casino is built, is prepared to counter with its own campaign, and could spend "easily up to $3 million," said spokesman Michael F. Trainor. |
