The World Series of Poker warm up tournament began January 1,2001. Round one tournaments will continue until April 7th. Here is how it works.

You will need to create an account and download the software in order to play. The file is 2.5 Megs and the length of time to download it will vary depending on your modem. It will take about 15 minutes for a 28.8 modem. I found that the software installed with out any problems. The interface and graphics are superb.

Multi-table tournaments are held daily. You must make it to the final table in a round one tournament in order to qualify for round two. In the round two tournament you must be one of the top four finishers to advance to the final round. The winner of the final round will receive an entry in this year's WSOP. All the information and FAQ's can be found on the Poker Pages site.

Once you have the software you can play in the tournament and also play in numerous side games as well. In the side games you are given $200. If you lose that you have to wait until the next day to get another $200. There are many serious players trying to improve their skills. It's not like some of the other sites where you are constantly given money every time you go broke. The caliber of the players in these side games is very good. It presents an excellent opportunity to hone your personal skills.

You have your choice of several games and limits to choose from for a side game. You can play Hold'em, Stud or Omaha at low limits or higher limits if you desire. You also can choose to play one on one against an individual player.

I live an hour away from the casino. As much as I would like to, it is not practical for me to drive that distance every night to play poker. Over the last year I have been practicing by playing a few hundred hands a day using Wilson's Turbo Software. Now with the opportunity to play for free online at Poker Pages, I have been able to expand my daily practice by playing and interacting with other players from around the world.

Here are some tips for using the software that I have discovered.
