Frugal Fridays

by Guide Bill Burton

Las Vegas is a land of opportunity for savvy travelers looking to take advantage of the promotions and comps offered by the casinos. The value of these can help defray some of the cost of your vacation.

In Las Vegas the competition among the casinos has spawned a market for a large variety of different and unique promotions to attract players. Unfortunately the average tourist never hears about many of them or hears about them after they return home.

I live in New England and we have a saying about the weather. "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute it will change." I have found that the same can be said about casino promotions in Las Vegas. They are constantly changing and sometimes a good deal that you read about is long gone before you arrive in town.

Years ago I discovered a monthly publication called the Las Vegas Advisor that listed the latest promotions and bargains around town. The Internet was in its infancy and there were no sites to be found with any type of promotional information about Las Vegas. This was the only publication at the time devoted to deals and promotions in Las Vegas. Publisher Anthony Curtis supplied his readers with information about the best deals in town. He also introduced many of his readers to Jean Scott.

I wrote about Jean Scott in my column last year . Jean is the author of the Frugal Gambler and has been crowned the Queen of Comps. She has appeared on numerous TV Shows and writes columns for Strictly Slots and Casino Player magazine. She has turned obtaining comps and getting values from promotions into a science that can be practiced by the average player

The Las Vegas Advisor now has its own website and Jean Scott is writing a weekly column called Frugal Fridays. The column keeps readers updated on the latest promotions, special deals and bargains found around town.

While Frugal Fridays has a lot of information to offer visitors to Las Vegas there is a wealth of good information for everyone. Jean writes about more than promotions. She shares insights about the games and casinos that can be used regardless where your visit or play. In a recent column she talked candidly about losing streaks which we have all experienced. Readers of her column can get a realistic view of the ways casinos operate and what they can expect during their visits.

She also offers tips about the machines themselves. One column dealt with the dangers of the double up option on the video poker machines while another showed a way to speed up a machine that was racking up credits after a win.

Advice from the Queen of Comps can help you get the 'Royal' treatment at casino. A few "Frugal" minutes invested on Friday could pay nice dividends throughout the week. Take a look at Jean Scotts Frugal Fridays.

Until next time, remember:
"Luck comes and goes...Knowledge stays forever."
