Using a Gambling System

A reader asked the following question. “I have never been to a casino before. I have a hedge betting strategy/system that I want to try out. In an online chat room someone told me that ALL systems in a casino are not allowed. I responded by saying that I thought only people who count cards in black jack get banned. This person went on to tell me that they are pretty sure that if I am at a Roulette table long enough using my system that I will be asked to leave. Is this true?”

The casinos LOVE all system players except for card counters. Other than card counting in Blackjack, there is not a system in the world that will change the house edge on any of the casino games. All a system will do is effect the short term fluctuations of the payer’s bankroll. Most systems fall into three categories, a positive progressive system, a negative system or a hedge system.

The ultimate “Money Management” strategy is to bet more when you are winning and less when you are losing. This is easier said than done because you never know when a streak occurs until it ends. A simple way to bet more when you are winning is to slowly progress you bets after a win and decrease your bet to the minimum when you lose. This is known as a positive progressive system.

Here is an example of a progressive betting system. You make a $10 bet and win. You are now even. You don’t progress yet. You make another $10 bet and win. Your next bet is $15. You are progressing but you still have a profit of $5. If you win the $15 bet you go to $20. If you lose you go back to $10.

A negative progression system has you increase your bets when you lose in hopes of getting back to even after a loss. The is the Martingale System calls for you to double your bets after each loss. This is very dangerous and you should NEVER do it.

With a hedge system you are making two bets that offset each other. You are hoping to grind out a small profit. Many Craps players will make a $10 don’t pass bet and then place the 6 & 8 for $6 a piece. If the shooter sevens out you only lose two dollars. If the shooter throws some sixes and eights before he sevens out you have a nice profit.

The reason a system can work during a casino visit is because it takes advantage of the short term fluctuations in probability. The player has the option of quitting at any time. However most of them don’t and end up giving back any profits they made.

The casinos know that no matter what system a player uses, they will still win in the long run. The casino is open 24/7 and has an unlimited bankroll. They don’t have to sweat the system player who has an occasional win. In fact the casinos would love to have every player who devises a system to win the first few times they use it when they play. Once a player get a feeling that they have found the perfect system, the ultimate human emotion will kick in, GREED. They will think their system is unbeatable and start increasing their bets. Eventually the math of the game will catch up with them and the casino will have their money back along with some of the player’s money.
